you've got mail... + a giveaway!

I remember how I used to love getting mail as a child. Because as a child, there existed only two kinds of mail: postcards and letters, which are both great. I really couldn't understand why my parents didn't like mail as much as I did, especially not those in the pretty blue envelopes. Well, at least now I understand..

But I still love postcards, so I jumped up in enthusiasm when my former housemate told me about postcrossing. Mail that did not consist in bills and 50 shades of bureaucracy? I was in!

The idea behind it is very simple: whenever you feel like it, you request an address, write a postcard to someone somewhere in the world. Then, after a while you receive a postcard from someone else. You don't keep in touch, you don't have to write when you don't feel like it, you just occasionally send and receive postcards :)

Today I decided to send some postcards. Only trouble was that our stash of postcards consists out of horrific cards. It was bad, really bad. Over the years we had picked all the acceptable ones out, and what was left was a staple of pure horror. Like the cards that you wouldn't even send to your least favorite family member. So, of course, I decided to paint some of them by myself. I mean, why walk to the shop if you've got paint? Here's a few that I made:

I always try to match the cards with the stories or preferences of the receiver. This lady wrote that she was a big fan of Chinese culture. So, naturally, I complied :)

I painted this card for a really cool girl in Finland. She was a steampunk car enthousiast, I mean.. how cool is that?

As you can see, I also scribbled the Martini tower for a girl from Germany, and did my best in finding the coolest Dutch phrases for a guy in Russia. Oh my, sending mail is almost as much fun as receiving it!

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE..... GIVEAWAYS!!

Since I am in a very generous mood today - either due to springtime, or I'm just drugged by my hay fever medicine- I'm willing to send a few of these postable mini-paintings for free!!

You can  reply to this post if you'd like one! I
If you describe what kind of card you would like, I'll know what to make (Although I'm keeping some artistic freedom here!).
Next week, I'll randomly choose three that receive a card :)

UPDATE: wow! I'm a bit overwhelmed by the attention that I got after refashionista blogged about my refashion. thank you so much for the kind comments! just to be clear: I'll randomly pick winners on Tuesday evening ( European time). So before then, you can still enter :)

Cheers!

  6. I've recently started recycling cereal boxes and such to make into art journals. The little cardboard band Starbucks puts around the cup I make into notepads for my purse. I found your blog by way of Jillian, the ReFashionista. Your art is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your projects. Love your blog already.

  7. Discovered the blog through Refashionista and will definitely be following. My son and I live in a small townhouse in USA and we collect tiny art since we have a tiny space! I'm artist who has fallen in love with knitting a few years ago, and my son loves Legos and anything by Tolkien! We also love birds, nature, and learning about other cultures! Your art is amazing and your blog very inspiring! I'm also a 'maker,' living creative is the only way for us!

  8. Hi! I found you via Refashionista as well! I'm a Canadian living in Taiwan, and I started making my own stuff when I couldn't find exactly what I wanted here, but now I'm just making things (clothes and prints, mostly) for fun. I'd love to exchange a postcard with you!
Things I love: dinosaurs, cranes, elephants, and dragons, usually in bright cheerful colours. I look forward to reading through all your archives now that I've found your site!

  10. How much fun! I love making cards and sending out letters. I would love to open up my mailbox and find a postcard that was happy and whimsical with a woodland theme. Or maybe something in line with that amazing astronaut painting! I really enjoy making cards too. I also found you through Refashionista's blog, and enjoyed reading through your adventures in making things while drinking my morning coffee.

  12. I also found you through Refashionista and checked out the cushion bag, which also seems like a great idea. Off now to hunt for a suitable cushion. If not too late for the giveaway, I like fairies and mice.
